Public Relations & Sports Management
Public Relations is a field of many different skills. As a public relations professional you act as a liaison between you, your brand, and your targeted audience. At the University of Oklahoma I am learning to not only write press releases, create media kits, and craft a targeted message, but I am encouraged to broaden my skill set. I get taught what it means to work in the professional world and challenged to take my work a step further and understand concepts from a marketing, advertising, and journalistic point of view. As for sports management I am focusing in on what it means to work with people and products through strategy, marketing, and ethical standards.
Public Relations ResearchAs the crucial part of any campaign, public relations requires research every step of the way. As one of the toughest courses in my academic career, it taught me not only how to properly conduct research but how to present it. As a class we were challenged to conduct all the necessary research to support our recommendation to the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication on changing the name of the college to better encompass the majors offered. All research findings were presented professionally to our client and provided me with legitimate public relations experience.
Public Relations WritingBeing a public relations major, it was necessary for me to take this class in order to learn how to write a press release accurately. This course taught me quick deadlines, how to create a website, newsletter, online portfolio, and even a video resume through online programs such as Weebly and Medium. In this course I also learned how to write a pitch letter, create an attractive media kit, and how to showcase myself, my education, and skills for future employers.

Sports Public RelationsIn this course we explored all aspects of media that exist within the athletic department and how they communicate and strategize to work effectively. As crisis is at the core of Public relations, the class was challenged with a real life scenario crisis and had to react accordingly. The coursework included press releases, feature stories, game stories, and a public relations campaign over the athlete of our choice to promote for an award. A sports information director of a D1 athletic program wears many hats and through this course I got a front row seat to see just how it is done by having the senior associate athletics director for external operations, Kenny Mossman as a resource and professor.

Introduction to AdvertisingIn my first advertising class we learned the fundamentals of what it means to work in an advertising agency. Meaning we learned to allocate a media budget, conduct research, and work as an assistant creative director for a real brand. While using programs like Adobe Photoshop, I acquired the skills necessary to create a full length plan book and campaign for Burger King.
Principles of Organization & ManagementThrough this course I learned the structure and organization of how business is conducted. With an interest in management, we explored theories used within the workplace and how to ultimately optimize either efficiency or effectiveness. We were tasked to think strategically and analytically to solve real world issues as a group and not only give our opinions on what we thought was best to solve the issues at hand but how we would solve them. Two topics I was particularly interested in that we covered in the course were human relations and ethics because I believe that those are what can build or break down a company the most.
